Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris, the owners of Aston Villa, aim to complete a massive takeover, and Douglas Luiz might play a key role in that attempt.
Villa are the flagship of Edens and Sawiris’ V Sports multi-team conglomerate, which also includes Portuguese side Vitoria and affiliations with Japanese club Vissel Kobe, among others.
The opportunity arose after 777 Partners, the group implicated in a failed attempt to take up Everton, was dismissed by Brazilian courts. In 2022, the Miami-based group acquired 70% of Vasco in a deal worth £261 million.
Edens and Sawiris would have to pay a similar amount to complete the transaction. That would easily surpass the £30 million the couple paid for Villa in 2018, despite the fact that the club was in debt at the time.
Edens and Sawiris are thought to be one of three groups in talks to purchase Vasco, a four-time Brazilian champion and one of the country’s ‘Big 12’ clubs.

Luiz, who was one of Villa’s best players as the club qualified for the Champions League in 2023-24, began his career at Vasco. From 2016 to 2017, he made 29 appearances for the club.
One of the reasons Edens and Sawiris are seeking a multi-club model with colonies outside of Europe is to expand into new business markets. And Luiz might provide the ideal opportunity for V Sports to connect with the team following the takeover.
The 26-year-old would most certainly participate in collaborative marketing operations and might play a key role if Edens and Sawiris took Villa to Brazil for a profitable pre-season tour, for example.
