Aston Villa could match a club’s £26 million asking price for one of their great defenders, who has been named his country’s “very best” player.

NSWE seeking to back Emery with new Aston Villa signings

NSWE and transfer chief Monchi are reportedly preparing for the summer transfer market, which opens on June 14.

During his tenure at Villa Park in 2023/2024, manager Unai Emery led the team to a record-breaking Premier League finish and Champions League qualification for the first time in decades.

To keep their status among England’s elite teams, Villa may need to bring in new recruits and enhance parts of the pitch, especially given their more rigorous game calendar against top-tier opposition in Europe.

Aston Villa’s best Premier League performers under Emery – 2023/2024 Average match rating (WhoScored)
Ollie Watkins 7.27
John McGinn 6.98
Leon Bailey 6.96
Douglas Luiz 6.95
Boubacar Kamara 6.79

Emery is set to recruit Ross Barkley from Luton Town, a former Villa midfielder who enjoyed a successful season at Kenilworth Road despite being relegated.

Following Barkley, there is speculation that Villa may look to bolster their midfield ranks even further.Monchi is considering Juventus’ Adrien Rabiot and Villa’s interest in Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher.

“We’ve seen over the years in the Premier League that if you stand still, ultimately you go backwards,” remarked commentator Don Goodman to Villa News.

“Everyone else will be wanting to enhance their squad, so I can’t see why Aston Villa wouldn’t do the same. Obviously, Financial Fair Play laws apply, but Unai Emery is an experienced professional who will know exactly what he wants.

“He understands the attributes that Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool have, and what he needs to do to, not necessarily compete with them, but to close the gap slightly. I believe they should look to bring in two or three quality players over the summer.”

According to FC Inter News, Denzel Dumfries, an Inter Milan wing-back, might be one of the “two or three quality players” for Villa.

Aston Villa could meet the £26 million asking price for Dumfries.

Villa may pay Inter’s £26 million asking price for Dumfries, but the Netherlands international is still negotiating new terms at the San Siro.

The 28-year-old played 30 Serie A games for the eventual Italian champions, scoring four goals and assisting four others. Former Tottenham great Rafael van der Vaart praised Dumfries as his country’s “very best” player.

“Dumfries is our big star,” says van der Vaart.

“He is really our best player at the moment, he’s involved in everything,” he told Dutch TV NOS. “He has seven assists in the last seven games, but that number could have been higher. He is constantly on the move. An excellent player. His touches are also excellent, which was unusual in the past. “He is the ideal fullback.”
