Steelers Add Super Bowl Champion RB

On May 23, SportsTrust Advisors, the football agency representing former Kansas City Chiefs running back La’Mical Perine, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Perine had signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The agency wrote, “La’Mical Perine is headed to the Pittsburgh Steelers.”

Perine played in three regular-season games and three postseason games for the Chiefs last season. He played 13 special teams snaps against the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC championship game.

Perine did not play in the Super Bowl, but he did get a Super Bowl ring as a member of the team’s 2023 roster. The 26-year-old running back formerly played for the New York Jets. In 17 NFL games, he has 340 rushing yards and two touchdowns, as well as 14 receptions for 96 yards.

Steelers Sign Second RB This Week With La’Mical Perine Addition

Perine began his career as a fourth-round pick by the Jets in the 2020 NFL draft. However, after playing 10 games in his debut season, Perine was placed on injured reserve. He then appeared in only four games in 2021, and the Jets dismissed Perine at the end of the preseason prior to the 2022 season.

Perine played the most of the 2022 regular season on the Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins practice squads. However, he did not appear in a game. Perine averaged 5 yards per game during his college career with the Florida Gators. His finest statistical season came as a junior, when he carried for 826 yards and 7 touchdowns, averaging 6.2 yards per carry.

Perine is the second running back the Steelers have signed in three days. On May 21, Pittsburgh acquired Jonathan Ward, a former Tennessee Titans running back, to its roster. With two backfield signings, the Steelers now have seven running backs on their roster. Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren, and Cordarrelle Patterson are at the top of the backfield depth chart.

Pete competes with Aaron Shampklin and Daijun Edwards for the fourth running back position and special teams snaps. As a rookie for the Jets, Perine returned two kickoffs for 22 yards. He has 99 special teams snaps in his NFL career.
