Aston Villa favourite to continue in coaching role after sealing promotion

Conor Hourihane, a former midfielder for Aston Villa who was promoted to Derby County, has returned to Bodymoor Heath to continue coaching in the academy. Hourihane, a midfielder, accepted a two-year contract with Derby in the summer of 2022, but he started working with Villa concurrently with his playing duties the previous summer.

Four years ago, Hourihane commenced obtaining his coaching badges and declared that he would be coaching the Villa under-16 team starting in September of the previous year. The kids train in the evenings, and Hourihane has stayed in the Birmingham region, so it has been convenient for everyone as he now has two eyes focused on a coaching profession.

Hourihane, who made 132 appearances between 2017 and 2021 and assisted Villa in their promotion in 2019, said to the Athletic: “The more I’ve become obsessed with coaching, the more I’ve transferred everything onto my laptop.”Sessions, notes, and presentations are all here. I can explain how I will press in a specific formation, for instance, and I have information on set plays and how I envision my team using the ball or not.

“I obtain games from one of our (Derby) analyzers using a programme called Sportscode. To ensure I don’t forget the play patterns I enjoy, I will clip them up. This season, I’ve watched a lot of Arsenal’s set plays because they’ve been excellent. It’s essentially a never-ending portfolio of all the game’s elements. I have a sizable bible.

Regarding the ability to collaborate closely in the same setting as Unai Emery, Hourihane continued, “It’s his detail and intensity. He divides the group apart and removes specific members at specific points of the day. He places a strong emphasis on developing players individually, in units, and above all else. It has been quite interesting. It just demonstrates how exceptional coaching and a strong work ethic can bring out the best in players.
