£46m down the drain: Everton have been rinsed by Silva flop who cost £6m a season

Everton will have to severely pare down their roster and let go of several players who just aren’t good enough for the Premier League after years of unsustainable transfer dealings.

After a stellar season in which they finished with 13 of the 18 points available during the last six games, Sean Dyche’s team was able to clinch their spot in the Premier League.

But it’s evident that the manager has selected what he believes to be his strongest team because a number of players are either limited in playing time or aren’t able to make the starting lineup for the Toffees.

One player that is anticipated to leave Goodison is Michael Keane, who has only made nine appearances this season—his last start was in December 2023.

One senior player will leave the team at the conclusion of his current contract, according to the retained list the club provided after the 2023–2024 season. Dyche made the right decision by choosing not to extend his contract with the Toffees.

The stats of Andre Gomes at Everton in 2023–2024

Under Marco Silva’s leadership, midfielder André Gomes first joined the team on loan in 2018 before committing to Everton permanently in the summer of 2019 for a fee of £22 million.

After a string of successful stints in Europe, he was brought into the team with the intention of turning the Toffees into something special and elevating them above the competition.

But the Portuguese midfielder’s tenure on Merseyside has been marred by injury problems; following a foul by Heung-min Son that caused a major ankle injury, he never looked the same.

Gomes has only made 14 appearances for Everton in all competitions this season; Dyche would rather have other options. Gomes is a Portuguese playmaker.

His five-year permanent contract at the club is coming to an end due to his recent injury history and lack of effect when needed, thus the team will need to look elsewhere for competition for players like James Garner and Amadou Onana.

Even though Gomes didn’t have the desired effect when he joined the team from Barcelona, he has been a fantastic asset to Dyche.

Football is a cutthroat business where clubs must make difficult decisions in order to be viable and move up the pyramid. Given Everton’s recent struggles with relegation, this is something that must be done.

The amount of money Andre Gomes made at Everton

Gomes received a contract worth an estimated £112k per week after moving to Merseyside, according to Capology. This is a significant sum considering his lack of effect while at the club.

When combined with his £22 million transfer fee, the departing maestro will have taken home a total of £24 million by the time his time at Goodison ends next month, meaning the club will have spent £46 million on him throughout his time at Everton.

Following his big-money deal, he made 85 appearances for the Toffees, costing the team £541k each game. With his departure, Dyche’s team will save £6 million a season.

The club made the right decision in letting Gomes go, even though the Silva acquisition has had a terrible lot of bad luck with setbacks during his time on Merseyside. The money raised will go a long way towards averting any additional Premier League charges.
