Cowboys $39 Million Receiver in Danger of Being Traded

The Dallas Cowboys may consider making trades due to their salary cap constraints.According to Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine, the Cowboys might potentially trade or release three players this summer.

Brandin Cooks, a seasoned wide receiver in his final season of a two-year, $39.7 million contract, tops the list. Cooks is expected to have a $10 million cap hit in 2024.

“Brandin Cooks is a good receiver, but his best chance of setting an NFL record is to be traded again,” Ballentine wrote in a May 8, 2024 story titled, “Cowboys’ Potential Trade, Cut Candidates After 2024 NFL Draft.” “He is now tied with Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson as the most moved player in the league since 1980.

“Trading the veteran receiver would save the Cowboys $8 million against the 2024 salary ceiling if accomplished after June 1. “The Cowboys didn’t take a receiver until the sixth round,” Ballentine explained. “Ryan Flournoy, a 6’1″ 202-pound receiver with 4.44 speed and some FCS potential, could be an unsung gem of the class.”

“If they believe Flournoy can contribute right away and that Jalen Tolbert will finally break out, they could decide that Cooks is not a necessity in the offence.”

Dallas Cowboys Receiver Brandin Cooks Came on Strong During the Final Stretch of 2023

The veteran receiver had his lowest statistical season since 2021. Cooks had 54 receptions for 657 yards and 8 touchdowns in 16 games for the Cowboys in 2023.

However, Dallas would be wise to think again before releasing Cooks. The playmaker’s bond to Dak Prescott strengthened during the season. Five of Cooks’ eight touchdowns came in the last seven regular-season games.

Verdict on Cowboys Trading Brandin Cooks: Dallas Should Pass on Dealing the Receiver

Instead of cutting their roster, the Cowboys could use more wide outs. Dallas released Michael Gallup this offseason and has yet to sign a veteran replacement.

Releasing Cooks with the expectation that sixth-round pick Ryan Flournoy will immediately contribute is ridiculous. Dallas needs third-year wideout Jalen Tolbert to complement CeeDee Lamb and Cooks.

Cowboys Rumors: Dallas Met With Ex-Jaguars Receiver Zay Jones

Following the draft, Dallas expressed an interest in signing another wideout. The Cowboys met with Zay Jones after his release from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

According to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, former Jaguars wide receiver Zay Jones is visiting the Cowboys today. This information was shared on X on May 8. “Jones has previously met with the Titans and Cardinals. Several teams are fighting for the former second-round pick. Zay Jones, who was born in Dallas and attended prep school in Austin, might come home with the Cowboys.”

Cowboys Rumors: Dallas May Be in a Battle With the Chiefs for Zay Jones

Jones will also visit with the Kansas City Chiefs on May 9. Given the competition for Jones, Dallas may need to increase their prospective offer.

According to Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Cowboys once refused to allow a desired free agent leave the premises. “It might still happen, but Zay Jones’ visit to the Chiefs is not a good indication. Perhaps he wants to go on all of the visits before making a decision.

“What we know is that the Cowboys, his father’s team, did not give him a reason to cancel the trip to Kansas City.” They were never going to make him an offer he couldn’t refuse.
