Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, justified his decision to not extend the contract of a key member of the offense through the 2024 season during the annual league meeting on Sunday. The Cowboys have taken a lot of heat this offseason for their dull free agency approach.

Micah Parsons wants more talent in 2024

Star Cowboys pass rusher Micah Parsons said earlier in his offseason he wanted management to literally put their money where their mouth was when it came to winning a Super Bowl. Parsons wanted help on the interior defensive line and at linebacker. The only offseason signing in free agency from outside Dallas was linebacker Eric Kendricks, brought in to replace a retiring Leighton Vander Esch.

Jones declared that the Cowboys would go “all-in” this season before to free agency. A few days later, he retracted his remarks, clarifying that “all-in” meant sticking with the main players.

But essential players like Tony Pollard and Tyron Smith left in free agency. Regarding left tackle Smith’s loss to the New York Jets, Jones was questioned. Jones claimed that the Cowboys couldn’t afford to keep Smith with the team through the 2024 season, according to Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The Dallas Cowboys are shot on funds

Jones is right when he says the Cowboys’ cap is too little. Prior to the draft, they have $5 million in cap space. They may have sought to restructure certain contracts and extend others in order to free up enough cap space for Tyron. However, using the core from the 2023 season is not the idea.

When Jones said he was “all-in” for 2024, he wasn’t being truthful. He would prefer to invest his funds in a club that has a higher likelihood of winning the Super Bowl.
