Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy undergoes surgery for appendicitis, but still expects to be on sidelines for Week 14

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy isn’t planned on skipping Week 14 despite needing emergency appendix surgery.

In Week 14, the Dallas Cowboys and Mike McCarthy are getting ready for a pivotal game against

the Philadelphia Eagles. But the Cowboys unexpectedly found themselves without a head coach in the midst of those preparations.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, McCarthy was diagnosed with acute appendicitis on Wednesday.

He will have surgery this Wednesday afternoon and be discharged by the end of the day. McCarthy intends to continue coaching in Week 14 against the Eagles.

In McCarthy’s absence, Dallas has been led by it’s three coordinators in practice.

They’ll continue to do so until McCarthy makes his full recovery.

Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn will be one of those three in charge.

He says he knew something was up with McCarthy when he walked in the building on Wednesday.

However, with the Eagles on tap, Quinn is confident McCarthy will recover, via Jane Slater of the NFL Network.

“You think that tough Irishman is going to miss this game,” Quinn said.

With a 9-3 record, Dallas is one game behind the Eagles in the NFC East going into their first matchup.

The Cowboys would pass Philadelphia for the division lead with a victory in Week 14.

Dallas can accentuate their playoffs run with a vital divisional victory, even though they’ve already positioned themselves in postseason contention.

It was impossible for Mike McCarthy to look away from that, much less take part in it.

The Cowboys will first make sure that their head coach is well enough to be on the sidelines and perform his duties following an unexpected appendix surgery.

McCarthy, though, is prepared to assist in leading the Cowboys to victory if he is approved.
