Man Utd open Onana talks as Everton chase McTominay deal

Football Transfers can confirm that Manchester United has started negotiations with Everton midfielder Amadu Onana for January.

According to sources, head coach Erik ten Hag preferred the 22-year-old to Sofyan Amrabat during the summer, but they were unable to get him at the time due to financial constraints. According to what we’ve been told, there’s enough money to bring in one big signing in January; everything else would be loan agreements.

One of the reasons why the Premier League giants want to bring in Onana from Goodison Park is because of the youngster’s versatility – he can play anywhere across the backline as well as in the No.6 position.

Sir Jim Ratclffe’s recruitment revamp

A partial ownership stake in the team was revealed on Christmas Eve by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos, who aim to completely overhaul the Man Utd midfield, including players on the squad who are free to depart in the summer or January. Even with their recent bad performance, the Red Devils still want to contend for Champions League football the next year.

Meanwhile, Everton have a long-standing admiration for Scott McTominay going back to the summer. We understand that the Scotland international – who almost left Old Trafford during the last window to West Ham – is a major transfer target for Sean Dyche, who is looking for Premier League-proven players who can come in and make an immediate impact on the side. There is the idea, according to sources, that a deal involving the two players could benefit all parties.

Although Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules constrain Everton and Manchester United, such a pact would allow each team flexibility. Man Utd is aware that in order to have any chance of qualifying for a European competition the following season, they will need to make squad investments.
