No-nonsense Everton boss Sean Dyche has claimed the Premier League side will not recalling Rangers-linked Mason Holgate this January.
Dyche did not hold back when addressing concerns regarding the 27-year-old’s situation, particularly with regard to Holgate’s dearth of playing time while on loan at Southampton.
Sean Dyche has pushed Mason Holgate to step up to the plate and handle the task at St Mary’s, making it very evident that the center-back angled for the trade at the beginning of the season.
As things stand, the centre-back has made only five appearances for Southampton this season and he hasn’t been seen since playing against West Brom in November.
Sean Dyche on Rangers-linked Mason Holgate
Currently managed by ex-Rangers defender Russell Martin, the Southampton boss has previously suggested the ball is in Everton’s court with regards the centre-back.
Responding specifically to the ex-Scotland star’s stance on the defender, Sean Dyche was clear that Mason Holgate has got exactly what he asked for on the South Coast.
“The player made it very clear he wanted that fresh start,” said Sean Dyche. “That sort of fresh feel, going somewhere else, fresh challenge.
“He wanted to get his teeth into it and that’s what I’m sure he will be doing. I know he hasn’t played as much as he wanted but that’s part of a professional’s life.”
When asked if Mason Holgate could make the decision over his future, Dyche responded: “No, he’s a Southampton player at the current time.”
Everton defender needs to focus at Southampton
In December, Rangers were rumored to be interested in Mason Holgate, a center-back who was having trouble playing for Southampton.
However, it’s obvious that Sean Dyche will force the defender to persevere after Holgate, who was linked to Ibrox, requested for a temporary release in the summer.
The center back will probably regret using his ticket in the most recent window because Sean Dyche is obviously a tough guy to deal with.
Watching the clip, you can detect that the Everton manager is not messing around and it may serve as a warning to Rangers or any other suitors.
Once tipped for the very top by Carlo Ancelotti, the defender has lost his way in recent seasons and it appears he’s got plenty of work to do to get his career back on track.
The transfer window hadn’t even opened when Philippe Clement made his first move for Rangers and now, with Steven Alzate linked, it looks like being a busy start to the month.
The Brighton midfield is said to have been offered to the Gers boss with the 25-year old currently out on loan at Standard Liege, the club Nicolas Raskin moved to Ibrox from.
As Philippe Clement looks to strengthen his Rangers squad, a previous assessment of Steven Alzate could prove useful, as could his countryman.
Rangers have Nicolas Raskin reference for Steven Alzate
Raskin played alongside Alzate for Standard before heading to Glasgow last January, ironically, it was this move that allowed the Colombian international to prove what he was really capable of.
Gordon Greer, Brighton’s loan manager, delivered his assessment to the team’s media after witnessing the 25-year-old assume a more significant part for the Juniper Pro League team:
“In the past few months, he [Alzate] has excelled. After selling Nicolas Raskin to the Rangers, Steven was able to return to his more comfortable position as the holding midfielder.
“We were really hoping for him to stay a starter after he moved, and he has been one for the entire season.”
