I posed the question, “Who are the most important Newcastle United players?” precisely four weeks ago.
Who may Eddie Howe be trading with this summer, in terms of purchasing and selling?
Every summer, it is inevitable that some players from Newcastle United will depart in order to provide way for and facilitate the arrival of new players, as well as to support this financially.
What then were the available possibilities for moving out Newcastle United players this summer in order to make room for the much-needed new recruits?
I have thus gone back and read my post from May 28, 2024, to see what order I put our different squad members in and how important (or not) they are.
Needless to say, since I wrote my piece four weeks ago, the situation has heated up considerably, particularly with rumors that players like Callum Wilson, Miguel Almiron, Elliot Anderson, and Yankuba Minteh could be on their way out.
So how did I rank them against the rest of the NUFC team back in May 2024?
All of the current Newcastle United players in order of importance, as we prepare for the 2024/25 season (compiled 28 May 2024):
Alexander Isak
Bruno Guimaraes
Anthony Gordon
Sandro Tonali
Joelinton
Nick Pope
Sven Botman
Joe Willock
Lewis Hall
Tino Livramento
Harvey Barnes
Elliot Anderson
Fabian Schar
Kieran Trippier
Dan Burn
Callum Wilson
Sean Longstaff
Miguel Almiron
Lewis Miley
Yankuba Minteh
Jacob Murphy
Jamaal Lascelles
Martin Dubravka
Matt Targett
Emil Krafth
Harrison Ashby
Bottom nine
Jamal Lewis
Garang Kuol
Matt Ritchie
Paul Dummett
Loris Karius
Mark Gillespie
Ryan Fraser
Isaac Hayden
Jeff Hendrick
It’s always interesting to review your previous thoughts, comments, and writings, and none of the guys that are currently being rumored to be going are among the top eleven players who I believed should have been retained a month ago.
Elliot Anderson ranked 12th on my list out of the four rumored leavers, Callum Wilson came in at 16, Miguel Almiron at 18, and Yankuba Minteh at 20!
While Almiron and Wilson have been great contributors to the NUFC, Anderson and Minteh may develop with time, and none of the four are terrible salesmen; even if they were, none of them would be in the starting lineup for the upcoming season if everyone is healthy.
I could appreciate the frustration, worry, and indignation felt by some Newcastle United supporters if there was conjecture that four members of my starting eleven would be departing.
But in my opinion, the fury is out of proportion to what is actually happening, as well as the Newcastle United players who are most likely to depart in order to comply with PSR AND allow Eddie How to bring in his own targets.
