Shayden Morris to continue impressive Aberdeen renaissance by hitting major landmark against Rangers

When they host Rangers tonight, the Dons, who have had a successful start to the league season, will have the opportunity to extend their winning streak to 16 games.

Shayden Morris is set to make his landmark 50th appearance for Aberdeen.

If the former Fleetwood Town player plays Rangers at Pittodrie this evening, he will reach the half-century mark for competitive games. Under new manager Jimmy Thelin, the 22-year-old has brought his career back to life. On Saturday, he supplied the cross that resulted in Peter Ambrose’s game-winning goal against Dundee United. During Aberdeen’s undefeated Premiership and Betfred Cup run, Morris had been able to contribute.

He also netted his first Aberdeen goal in the Premier Sports Cup win over East Kilbride in the group stages. The Englishman was signed by former boss Jim Goodwin from Fleetwood Town two years ago. Morris was in and out of the team under Goodwin and Barry Robson. The writing looked to be on the wall for Morris after interim manager Neil Warnock substituted him early doors in an early collapse at Motherwell. Warnock then gave Morris time off to try and get his confidence up.

Leighton Clarkson, a midfielder, is also getting close to making his 100th Aberdeen appearance. He currently has 97 Dons appearances, and if he plays against Rangers tonight and Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final on Saturday, he will reach 100 against Dundee next month.

In other places If Aberdeen defeats Rangers tonight, Jimmy Thelin would tie his longest unbeaten streak in the top division. The highly regarded Swede has already guided the winning Dons to a 15-game winning streak and tied Celtic, the Premiership leaders. When Philippe Clement’s team travels to Pittodrie, he will be hoping to push that to 16. Aberdeen would lead rival Rangers by nine points with a victory.

For Thelin, unbeaten sequences are nothing new. At Elfsborg, he enjoyed a 16-game winning streak. Between April and July of last year, Aberdeen suffered two losses to its long-time rivals, BK Hacken. Brommapojkama, Degerfors, Mjalby, Halmstad, Sirius, Varnano, Norrkoping, Malmo, AIK, Varberg, Hammarby, Kalmar, and Djurgarden were all defeated by Elfsborg during their winning streak. Additionally, Thelin might claim draws against IFK, Varberg, and Djurgarden. Even more remarkable could be his undefeated start to life at Pittodrie. Earlier this month, he pulled off a 2-2 comeback draw away to champions Celtic, his only tie in 14 games..

In the Premiership, Thelin has guided Aberdeen to victories over Motherwell, Dundee, Hearts, Dundee United, St Johnstone, St Mirren, Kilmarnock, and Ross County. The Dons will also play Celtic in the Betfred Cup semifinal on Saturday. They have beaten Queen of the South, East Kilbride, Airdrie, Dumbarton, Queen’s Park and Spartans to get to this stage. During his six years at Elfsborg, Thelin had multiple lengthy streaks without a loss that also reached double figures.
