England rugby star labels All Blacks’ Haka ‘ridiculous’ and wants it binned
The All Blacks tradition should be “binned,” according to England rugby player Joe Marler, who has attacked New
Zealand’s Māori dance, the Haka.
In the Autumn Nations Series matchup between New Zealand and England at Twickenham on Saturday, Marler has
come under fire for his “ill-judged” remarks.
In response to the criticism, Marler seemed to delete his X social media account before quickly resurfacing to
maintain that he was merely attempting to have “fun.”
The 34-year-old England prop, who has helped his country win three Six Nations championships and plays club
rugby for Harlequins, stated on social media that “context is everything.”
“Just trying to generate interest in a major rugby match for a little fun.” Some crazy answers. Huge Love I also have
to feed my narcissism.
Previously, Marler had posted, “The Haka needs binning.” It’s absurd. It’s only useful when teams genuinely respond to it in some way. same as the league boys did the previous week.
Their first representative side, The Natives, performed the New Zealand rugby haka for the first time during a tour of Britain and Australia in 1888-89.
“Those who don’t know about the haka, who might speak ill of those cultural icons, would be coming from a place of
ignorance and would be ill-judged,” said Helmut Modlik, CEO of Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira, in response to
Marler’s comments regarding the act, which is customarily performed by the All Blacks team before every
international rugby match.
It is not the first time Marler has disrespected the All Blacks; in 2019, he crossed the halfway line during New
Zealand’s performance of the dance, which players are not allowed to do. As a result of his actions, England was
fined £2,000 for violating Rugby World Cup tournament rules “relating to cultural challenges.” “Remember, while it
is part of a sporting spectacle, the haka is a cultural taonga, treasure, supplied to NZRU to perform respectfully,
which they do now.”
