Wrexham has received a fresh cash injection, with co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney receiving investment from a New York-based family who made their wealth in medical manufacturing.
Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have welcomed investment from “world-class partners” the Allyn family, who gained their fortune in medical manufacturing.
The New York-based family owned the medical corporation Welch Allyn for 100 years before selling it in 2015 and shifting its focus to investments. Along with Reynolds and McElhenney, the family has founded Red Dragon Ventures LLC, which will “help fuel the Club’s lofty ambitions, as well as those of the broader Wrexham community”.
According to a press release from the League One team, the Allyn family has joined as “minority investors,” and Reynolds and McElhenney have welcomed them with a statement.
“Wrexham has earned the world ‘s attention and we are focused on bringing on board world-class partners to help with the next phase of our growth,” the celebrities announced. “We have been lucky to meet the Allyn family, and we are astounded by their knowledge, friendliness, and dedication. They are exactly the kind of allies we’ll need for this incredible journey.”
Eric Allyn, manager and chief investment officer of the Allyn’s Family Office, said, “For more than a century, our family has focused on establishing outstanding businesses while simultaneously boosting fantastic communities.
“Our decades-long efforts in the Syracuse region are comparable to what Rob and Ryan have begun in Wrexham. We see Red Dragon Ventures as a way to invest in a world-class football team and, more importantly, the welcome community of Wrexham.”
The American investment is the latest sign of Wrexham’s growing international popularity. Deadpool star Reynolds and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia creator McElhenney took ownership the team in 2020, rescuing it from a 15-year hiatus in non-league and securing back-to-back promotions.
The journey has been documented in the Welcome To Wrexham documentary series, which has put the North Wales town on the map and cultivated a global fanbase. Phil Parkinson’s club is aiming a third consecutive promotion, sitting third after 13 games.
Wrexham CEO Michael Williamson feels the new investment will help the club grow. He stated: “The Allyn family’s investment in Wrexham AFC is fantastic news for both the club and the Wrexham community.”
“It will allow us to continue the development of the club while supporting the local community, which is something we truly believe in at this club.”
Welch Allyn was founded in 1915 and was family-owned until its sale to Hill-Rom in 2015 for $2 billion (£1.55 billion).
