The former Nairobi City Stars man was reportedly scouted by Brentford and Luton scouts on his Europa League debut for Swedish outfit Elfsborg against Az Alkmar, a game he ended up scoring and assisting.
Timothy “Babu” Ouma, a Harambee Stars midfielder, could become the second Kenyan to play in the famous English Premier League
after Brentford expressed interest.
Ouma, who has thrived since moving from Nairobi City Stars to Swedish club IF Elfsborg in August 2022, has garnered significant
attention in subsequent transfer windows, making him a valuable commodity in European football.
According to The Sun, Brentford, led by Thomas Frank, are interested in the gifted midfielder, as is Championship side Luton Town. Alan
Nixon, a renowned journalist, confirmed this development, stating:
“Premier League club Brentford and Championship team Luton show interest in Timothy Ouma and are said to have scouted Ouma during the match against AZ Alkmaar.”
Both clubs dispatched scouts to watch Ouma during Elfsborg’s stunning 3-2 defeat to Dutch club AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Europa
League. Scouts were reportedly thrilled by his explosive midfield performance, prompting speculation about his future.
Elfsborg reportedly turned down a significant bid of SEK 60 million (about Ksh 679 million) for Ouma during the recently closed transfer
window.
This denial occurred as rumors circulated regarding his prospective move to one of the English clubs. Ouma’s rapid rise has clearly made
him an important role at Elfsborg, but the rejected proposal indicates that the Swedish club intends to keep their prized asset, at least for
the time being.
If Ouma joins Brentford, he will follow in the footsteps of fellow Kenyan Victor Wanyama, who has previously played for Tottenham
Hotspur and Southampton in the English Premier League. Wanyama spent seven years in England, and Ouma could soon be Kenya’s next
great football export to the EPL.
Ouma’s transfer journey has been riddled with drama. The midfielder allegedly dumped his tools in protest after Elfsborg declined offers
for him, prompting him to miss the Harambee Stars’ international match against Zimbabwe in September.
The discontent in Ouma’s camp originated from the club’s rejection to accept a lucrative offer, which has left him looking for fresh
alternatives.
Despite these obstacles, Ouma has remained professional, and his on-field performances have continued to elicit acclaim from all sides.
He began his Elfsborg career in the youth sides and has fought his way up to the first squad, where he has one goal in 18 appearances this
season.
Timothy Ouma’s current deal with Elfsborg expires in the summer of 2026, giving the Swedish club significant control over his future.
However, with Brentford and Luton Town both expressing interest and prospective bids on the horizon, Elfsborg may be persuaded to
change their attitude in the approaching transfer window.
Another reason that may tip the scales in Ouma’s favor is goalkeeper Hákon Rafn Valdimarsson, who joined Brentford from Elfsborg in
January. Valdimarsson’s positive experience at the Premier League club could serve as an indirect benefit for Ouma, potentially
smoothing his road to the English top flight.
If Timothy Ouma’s dream move to Brentford or Luton Town comes true, he will become only the second Kenyan footballer to play in the
English Premier League. The 20-year-old’s future is undeniably bright, and his desire to play at the greatest level may soon result in a new
chapter in his already brilliant career.
According to reports from Sweden, Serie A side Empoli has also showed serious interest in signing the Kenyan international. However, a
potential deal with the Italian side fell through since both teams couldn’t agree on a transfer cost, leaving Ouma’s future uncertain for the
time being.
