Martin Keown savages Brendan Rodgers as Celtic boss told to stop Champions League pretence and ‘sort it out’

Brendan Rodgers and his side had nowhere to hide in Dortmund.

Martin Keown, an Arsenal veteran, has admonished Celtic against “pretending” they can match the elite clubs in the Champions League, following their defeat by Dortmund.

The Scottish Premiership champions were defeated by the Bundesliga heavyweights, who scored seven goals against Kasper Schmeichel. Nuri Sahin’s side may have scored more if they had been more ruthless in front of the Westfalenstadion.Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic collapsed in front of the Yellow Wall, resulting in another big defeat in Europe, following earlier losses to Barcelona, PSG, and Atletico Madrid.

And Keown was unimpressed with the Hoops’ performance in Germany, assigning responsibility to Rodgers, the Celtic players, and the clubs they face on a weekly basis domestically. Speaking on TNT Sports’ Goals Show, Keown stated, “You can’t keep playing the same way. They did not make any adjustments. In their own domestic league, they are simply too excellent for everyone else, and they are unaccustomed to being out of possession.

“It’s about learning from this, but the manager is equally responsible as the players. Winning in the domestic league is a collaborative effort, not solely due to Brendan’s managerial skills. They are both equally to fault. The manager must work this out with the players.

‘You can’t compete with some of Europe’s greats. They competed in the Champions League final last year. You have to make adjustments. You can’t pretend there’s no difference in quality, and that’s exactly what happened tonight.”
