Planning and hiring are crucial if the club’s owners want to lead them back to the Premier League, according to
former Birmingham City winger Jermaine Pennant.
The 41-year-old believes the Blues have the potential to lift their 13-year ban from the top division and is pleased
with the job that Tom Wagner and his Knighthead teammates have done thus far. He did, however, emphasize that
this might not be “an overnight fix.”
The team was demoted to the third division in May for the first time in 29 years, having last competed in the Premier
League in the 2010–11 campaign. After the Blues were demoted, Wagner reaffirmed his devotion to the team, saying,
“Our dedication to the betterment of this wonderful club transcends this unfortunate outcome.”
“Be assured that our plans for the uplifting transformation of the Blues remain steadfastly in place as we chart a
course forward, driven by your passion and support,” he continued.Since then, plans for a new stadium have been
presented, and the team has had a strong start to the season.
Their FA Cup campaign begins on Friday when they go to non-league Sutton United. They have only lost one of their
12 League One games and lead the standings by three points. Even while supporters could wish for a cup run, it’s
obvious what the team’s top objective is this year.
Pennant thinks Wagner and co-owner Tom Brady may be able to lead the Blues back to the big time, and he is
confident they will return to the Championship quickly. The former Birmingham guy did this by outlining a number
of goals they needed to accomplish in order to have a chance.
It is a huge club. He told BirminghamLive that the new owners, Tom Brady and the American guys, are not afraid to
support the team, particularly when it comes to the transfer market and the search for a new stadium.
“They want to rebuild Birmingham City, and if they stick to their plan and hire the right people, there is no reason
why they can’t return to the Premier League in the future.”
“I think 100 percent they will come out of League One and get back in the Championship,” the former winger, who
played 60 games for the Blues between January 2005 and July 2006, continued. Once they are in the Championship,
they must then find players who can help them exit.
“It’s undoubtedly a long-term effort that won’t be resolved tomorrow. However, I can see the Blues returning to the
Premier League in the future under the new owners.
