Despite their excellent start, Rangers’ Europa League group stage earnings might be about £5 million this season.
That is the opinion of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that it is much less than the £50 million he anticipates Celtic to earn from the Champions League.
Rangers are playing in the Europa League after failing to make it through the qualifying rounds of the Champions League.
The Scottish giants have beaten Malmo and FCSB in two of their first three games, but they lost to Lyon at Ibrox.
Philippe Clement’s side is currently 11th in the competition’s revised 36-team league phase, with the top eight clubs qualifying automatically for the knockout rounds and the ninth to 24th teams competing in a play-off.
Rangers are presently third in the Scottish Premiership, which means they may lose out on a Champions League position again next season.
Rangers need Champions League due to increased revenue
Borson suggested that the Glasgow team should compete in the Champions League because of the greater money on offer.
He told Football Insider: “A successful Europa League run simply does not compare to a Champions League run, especially now that there are eight games in the group stage.”
“I would expect Celtic to spend more than £50 million in this group stage, whereas Rangers will spend less than £10 million.
“I’d say much less than £10 million, probably less than £5 million.”
“That is a tenfold difference between the two competitions.
“They obviously know they need to be in the Champions League, but it’s easier said than done.”
