BBC NEWS, Ferrero pens open letter to Friedkins: “Let’s save Roma, stop wasting money on foreign directors”
AS Roma’s environment is becoming increasingly tense as the squad struggles on the pitch and the organization faces escalating fan criticism. Massimo Ferrero, an entrepreneur and former Sampdoria president, sent a lengthy open letter to owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin, which he published with La Presse.
In his passionate plea, Ferrero adds, “Dear Friedkins, Rome must be restored. Stop repairing problems and throwing money at this squad and club. I’ve pitted myself against Sampdoria since I’ve grown up as a Roma and have always supported them. The Roma of Di Bartolomei, of Liedholm, I grew up in Roma’s curva, my heart beating golden and crimson. But today I’m really furious, because, dear President Friedkin, we are delighted that you have come to invest in Roma, but we are dissatisfied since you are clearly surrounded by poor counsel.”
Ferrero criticized the club’s recent expenditures and management decisions, saying, “You haven’t spent 100 million; you’ve thrown it away.” Because you have people around you who may not understand football. Roma is not a European parliament, and foreign directors such as Monchi or Ghisolfi, who are unfamiliar with the Roma community, cannot handle it. Football must be attentively monitored; let us build a new Roma administration.
The former Sampdoria president emphasized the need of local expertise: “With all of our excellence, do we really need to hurt ourselves by bringing in people who have wasted our money?” We are not the UN; we are Roma. You, President, who should be appreciated for how much money you’ve invested in Roma, cannot come to Rome to play the American.”
Ferrero claims that his drive stems only from his passion for the club: “I don’t want money or work; all I want is for you to give us a dream.” I played 14 years with Sampdoria and achieved fantastic success. Football is love and passion. Do you want a sold-out stadium? Give us football. Today you’ve simply given us balls, balloons, and hot air, and it’s not your fault.”
The letter ends with an appeal: “I’m 74 years old, I don’t want money, and I want to give a dream to all my little wolves.” We are Romans, Romanisti, and we adore Rome. If you allow yourself to be guided by less money and more love, you will live each day with tremendous happiness. I’d want to meet you, dear President Friedkin: for the love of Roma, I’ll even catch the first flight to New York; let us preserve Roma.”
