Birmingham City saw a huge turnover of players in the summer transfer window following their relegation from the Championship.
Birmingham City have big plans for the future and getting relegated to League One was not part of them.
However, the drop from the Championship as freed them to spend in a big way. They’ve been able to almost completely revamp the playing squad at St. Andrew’s with Chris Davies at the helm of this new-look side.
Among those involved early on was Japanese ace Koji Miyoshi, who featured in each of the first three League One games. Few expected him to stick around after managing seven goals and six assists in 48 games during the 2023/24 campaign.
And move on he did, with Bundesliga side VfL Bochum pouncing to snap him up.
How has Miyoshi fared since leaving Birmingham City?
The move to Bochum was an eye-catching one for Miyoshi to make, swapping Birmingham City for the Bundesliga.
However, it looks as though the 27-year-old is going to be embroiled in another battle against the drop.
His side have taken just one point from the first eight games, losing four in a row. They’ve conceded 22 in that time and scored seven and are already seven points away from safety.
Miyoshi has played a part in five Bundesliga games, starting two. He most recently came off the bench for the last 20 minutes or so as Bochum were thumped 5-0 by giants Bayern Munich, with England captain Harry Kane and ex-Crystal Palace and Reading star Michael Olise among the scorers.
A long-term Germany stay?
Miyoshi was only with Birmingham City for the one season but he signed a four-year deal upon joining VfL Bochum, so perhaps he’ll be onboard there for a little longer.
He’ll be hoping to find increased game time though with starts at a premium early on.
The team’s struggles could offer him a route into the starting XI, so he’ll have to try and impress when the chances do arise, though that’s going to be easier said than done given Bochum’s form in the early stages of the new Bundesliga campaign.
