Arsenal’s midfield was embarrassed yesterday by Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers

How Morgan Rogers Ran our midfield ragged should not happen again

After a two-nil victory over Aston Villa, a team that had troubled us the previous season, Arsenal’s historic victory has finally settled in. Leandro Trossard and Thomas Partey’s goals in the second half ensured that we won.

It was encouraging that we managed to win, something that many successful teams seem to have a knack for accomplishing, even though I didn’t think we were convincing throughout the victory.

But I believe that midfield was one area of the game where we struggled, with Morgan Rogers being the main culprit. At times, his strength and directness just wore us ragged; when he engaged in duels, I believe his strength took us off guard.

Partey, who had played well during the preseason and the opening game of the new season, found it difficult to contain him in particular, but what shocked me a few times was how Declan Rice was handled.

I recognise the guy’s undeniable talent, but considering how cruel this league can be, we just cannot let a player consistently treat us like that.

This week’s formal confirmation of Mikel Merino as a duel winning machine could be helpful to us in situations like this one where we are losing the midfield battle.

Even so, the victory should be enough to offset any negative aspects of the match; there’s no need to worry about it, as I’m sure the team will return to the training field right away to work on resolving whatever problems we ran into.

I need to hear what you goons think. Did Morgan Rogers’ performance against our midfield cause Arteta any concern?
