Tottenham 4-0 Everton: Match Report & Instant Reaction | Another heavy defeat piles on the pressure

Pickford errors and Dyche inability to make changes hands Spurs the victory

To suggest Everton struggled in their first game of the season would be an understatement. After a 3-0 defeat to Brighton, Goodison Park was nearly empty at the end of the game. Disillusioned Everton fans expected more but received nothing but Mason Holgate coming in when the team needed a goal.

Spurs had high hopes when they began at home against Leicester, and the first half went as planned, but a goal from Jamie Vardy forced Spurs to split the points. Their sadness was exacerbated when Dominic Solanke and Rodrigo Bentancur sustained injuries.

Team News

The main alteration occurred just at the back. With veteran options Seamus Coleman, Nathan Patterson, and James Garner unavailable, and Ashley Young suspended for a red card while playing right back against Brighton and Hove Albion last week, Roman Dixon made his Everton debut. The addition of Dixon was the only alteration to the starting lineup from the previous week. James Tarkowski made his 77th consecutive start despite an injury scare that threatened to end his streak.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglu chose new acquisition Wilson Odobert the start over Richarlison, who sat on the bench. Yves Bissouma had returned to the team after missing the first match due to a disciplinary issue……cue the laughing gas jokes!

Match Review

The match began with Everton wearing their new away kit as Anthony Taylor blew his whistle. As Son kicked off, the rain was pouring down, and Tottenham put the pressure on early. A fine early save by Pickford from point blank range should have resulted in a goal.

Everton were unable to get the ball, and Odebert’s clever move resulted in a short corner kick. Son’s following shot deflected off McNeil, but Pickford was up to the task. It took over 9 minutes for Everton to get the ball into the offensive zone, with Iroegbunam’s attempt stopped.

A wonderful ball over the top to Maddison put the former England midfielder one on one with Pickford, who once again stood tall. Seconds later, Maddison delivered the ball, and Johnson’s header went just wide of the post. Spurs were swarming, and Everton was holding on.

The pressure paid off when Kulusevski took the ball across the edge of the box and set it up for Yves Bissouma, who smashed it against the underside of the bar and into the back of the net.

A fast ball over the top to Calvert Lewin was knocked down, but the ball was cleared for a corner. The Tarkowski header caused a scramble, but no one could get it in, and seconds later, a great cross from McNeil was met by Harrison, who was unable to keep the shot on goal. Everton was seeing more of the ball.

Jordan Pickford was the first to apologize after Tarkowski handed the ball back, and his initial touch was poor as Son was bearing down and easily knicking the ball off the keeper and rolling it into the open net. The England number one was revealed, and he accepted responsibility for his error.

Half an hour has passed, and we are down two. Dyche was standing on the sidelines, chatting to _____ while covering his mouth. I would love to know what he was saying. Tottenham began the game with 90% possession, which had now decreased to 80%.

Dwight McNeil got wide and open, and his ball was sent wonderfully to Calvert Lewin, but his header was ineffectual. As the half came to a close, McNeil fired a pass to the back post, where Tarkowski was waiting, but no one was there to convert. Tottenham was forced to defend two more corners, including a chance from Doucoure. As three minutes of additional time were declared,

Spurs had a late corner and threw it out to a wide open Pedro Porro fired barely wide of the far post. The half concluded with Jordan Pickford continuing to apologize to his team for his error. Everton had eight shots throughout the half, none of which were on target. The final ten minutes showed promise, but they needed to be more clinical in their conclusion.
