Sean Dyche makes surprise Roman Dixon decision – confirmed Everton XI v Tottenham

Sean Dyche has named his starting XI as Everton head to Tottenham Hotspur in their first away game of the new Premier League season on Saturday (24 August).

James Tarkowski, the captain of the Toffees, is anticipated to miss the match due to injury, therefore Dyche pulled off a massive curveball by starting the 31-year-old in central

defense with Michael Keane.

Roman Dixon, a 19-year-old academy right-back, replaces Ashley Young in the starting lineup, as revealed by the club on X. Ashley Young was sent off against Brighton last week.

Ever-present Jordan Pickford remains in goal, hoping for his first clean sheet of the new season despite giving up three goals on the first day of play.

With Dixon, who is half the age of 38-year-old Young, starting on the right side and Vitaliy Mykolenko, the club’s sole fit left-back, on the left, Dyche has limited alternatives on

either side of his back four.

After Tim Iroegbunam was by far their best player against Brighton, Idrissa Gueye and Iroegbunam stay in the double pivot, with Abdoulaye Doucoure playing at number ten.

Despite appeals for former Burnley player Jesper Lindstrom, a recent loan transfer from Napoli, to start, wide players Jack Harrison and Dwight McNeil remain in their positions.

After a disappointing afternoon at Goodison on the opening day, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is Dyche’s first option up front, as expected. The manager missed a Beto brace for the

Under-21s midweek.

Should Dyche need to make changes in North London, Beto is one of several potentially game-changing alternatives off the bench, and Iliman Ndiaye joins him in an attempt to

secure a starting position of his own.

Given Everton’s financial concerns this summer [The Athletic, 9 August], more expensive signings are improbable. If this is the team Dyche has available this season, he will be

looking to get the best performance possible from them in this match.
