Régis Le Bris confirms Sunderland duo could leave after being left out of brilliant win

Sunderland defeated Burnley spectacularly on Saturday to take the lead in the table.

Adil Aouchiche and Abdoullah Ba might leave the team this week, according to Régis Le Bris, as they weren’t included in the starting lineup for the victory over Burnley.

In addition to Tommy Watson, a young winger, Ian Poveda was added to the team for the first time since he joined as a free agent in the summer. Le Bris later stated that neither player had suffered an injury, but he couldn’t completely rule out the possibility of a late departure even though he felt both players had every opportunity to play their way back into his plans.

“This is the question of the whole competition in the squad,” Le Bris stated.

“They won’t be playing in that game, but if they perform well, they’ll be in it next. That is how it is. The players who didn’t play today or weren’t on the squad will still have the chance to participate if they put in a lot of work throughout the season.

When asked if either of them could go, Le Bris said, “It’s possible.” We’ll see because the transfer window is still open and extremely unpredictable.

Several additional players, such as Joe Anderson, Luis Hemir, Zak Johnson, and Jewison Bennette, are expected to go on loan this week.

Romaine Mundle’s opening goal proved to be the difference between the two teams, and Sunderland went top of the table following their most convincing victory of the season. Le Bris’s main irritation stemmed from the Black Cats’ dominance in the initial exchanges—they did not sustain their lead.

With just five minutes remaining, Sunderland successfully held their lead, requiring little save work from Anthony Patterson, who was sent off after receiving his second yellow card. Le Bris expressed his satisfaction with his team’s performance, saying they maintained their third straight clean sheet in as many games.

“I think the first 25 minutes were very good, the game we wanted to play,” Le Bris stated.

“The only thing I regret is that we only scored one goal; a second goal would have changed the game when we had this much momentum. We had a lot of opportunities to generate and retrieve the ball high, so this portion of the game was really interesting. Nothing was conceded by us. After that, they altered their building strategy to make it harder to retrieve the ball. We managed to maintain our shape and only gave up one chance before the half ended. Then, we made a few little adjustments, and I believe the result was improved. We had the chance to score a second goal but failed to do so, which made the game unique because they were determined to score. We give up the red card, but overall, I thought our defence and attitude were good; it was clear that we wanted to keep the goal intact.”

The only negative aspect of the victory was Neil’s red card; as a result, he will not be able to travel to Portsmouth because of his suspension. Le Bris expressed confidence in his ability to resolve the issue, predicting Alan Browne to return to the team and take on a somewhat more significant role.
