Matt’s £30m final farewell

MATT O’RILEY could bid farewell to Celtic fans against St Mirren in Paisley tomorrow.

The silky midfielder is on his way to Brighton in a record-breaking move that will exceed the previous highs of £25 million for Kieran Tierney to Arsenal and Filipe Jota to Al-Ettihad.

Last season, O’Riley became a key figure in Brendan Rodgers’ first squad, scoring 19 goals and 18 assists as the Hoops won the league and Cup double.

The London-born Danish international broke into Ange Postecoglou’s side quickly after his £1.5 million move from third-tier MK Dons in January 2022, scoring four goals in his debut season.

O’Riley has become a fan favourite at Parkhead, and it would be a fitting finale to his Celtic career if he could say his final goodbye this weekend.

The brilliant 23-year-old playmaker has made 124 appearances, scoring 27 goals and setting up 35 more.

This summer, Atalanta, who won the Europa League, failed to sign the midfielder despite five tries.

In January, Atletico Madrid were also unsuccessful in a £20 million transfer attempt.
