Mailbag: Biggest surprises from Oxnard?

Patrik: There are a few that particularly stood out to me in Oxnard, primarily due to the speed at which they either developed during training camp or adjusted to being recruited so rapidly. In the few I’ll mention here, I’ll start at the back and work my way forward: Jordan Phillips. Although he has only had one full padded practice, that is precisely my point—despite having hardly had time to unpack his belongings from the flight from New York, he started and performed admirably in the second preseason game against the Raiders. As for those who’ve made waves “outta nowhere”, sign me up for Kemon Hall on defense and Kelvin Harmon on offense. Both were camp additions that have created a difficult conversation at their respective positions as we near the preseason finale. As for the notable names, well, I did predict in early May that Tyler Guyton and Cooper Beebe would be starters come Week 1, so I can’t say they’ve surprised me at all, but I can say it’s been a blast to watch how swiftly they’ve developed.

Nick Haley: Tyler Guyton has surpassed my wildest expectations for his rookie training camp. I know there should be big expectations for a first-round choice. He does not appear to be a player who came in with just 14 career starts from his college days, and he has shown he can compete with some of Dallas’ best pass rushers. In his rookie training camp, Marist Liufau, a third-round choice, has filled almost every position a linebacker could be expected to occupy. Concerning.
