Burnley may get even with Ian Maatsen’s error thanks to the Chelsea deal: View

With expectations high among the fan base following a fantastic second-tier campaign under Vincent Kompany the year before, top-half predictions were abound. However, they failed spectacularly with a 19th-place finish. The Clarets spent over £100 million in the summer transfer window last year, equalling their biggest spending ever.

There was a lack of focus on recruitment; many wingers were signed and then forgotten about, while other positions, such as left-back, were neglected, and Kompany did not provide any candidates for that role. Also, Ian Maatsen’s ingenuity on that side of the ball was limited because Chelsea had him on loan the previous season.

The Clarets made an attempt to sign Maatsen permanently, but the left-back ultimately declined a transfer to Turf Moor on deadline day. Though they have wisely signed Humphreys with an option to buy included in his contract should they be promoted to the top division, they will be hoping to avoid a Stamford Bridge snub once more.

Humphreys spent the season on loan with Swansea City, impressing in the Championship with his recovery pace and ball quality, which fit Luke William’s philosophy. He appeared with the Blues throughout the preseason, but when it became clear that he was not going to fit into Enzo Maresca’s plans, a move elsewhere was pursued.

Burnley was not the only club in the race for his signature, but the Clarets made their move last weekend to sign the defender. With Ameen Al-Dakhil being heavily touted for a move away from the club and Dara O’Shea looking like he will be on his way back to the Premier League, a loan move for Humphreys was wrapped up in a similar fashion to Maatsen.

Unknown is the amount of minutes the kid is expected to play, but the prodigy will be looking to start for Scott Parker. If he can show off his skills for a team that is regarded to be in the running for the championship, his value will increase if he can be a part of a promotion.-Winning side.

Why Humphreys’s effort will be successful and benefit Burnley

There are benefits for Burnley in that they will have the opportunity to exact revenge and prevent a déjà vu moment. Despite spending the previous season on loan at Coventry City, Maatsen, of course, was a key player in Burnley’s promotion, contributing five goals and five assists in the second division to demonstrate his abilities.

Burnley probably underestimated the Dutchman’s ability, and their nightmare resulted from not adding a player to bring on when his loan period ended. After Maatsen turned them down after getting a taste of first-team football at Chelsea, the club had not made a bid for his services until deadline day, when it became clear that Chelsea would be prepared to sell.

The left-back apparently wanted to move earlier in the summer, but Chelsea was hesitant to sell, which made the situation more difficult to accept before the club and player’s perspectives changed. Because of the inconvenient timing, Burnley was left without a candidate for that role.

However, Burnley now have the upper hand thanks to their agreement to sign Humphries. Should he have an outstanding season at Turf Moor with fellow defenders Maxime Esteve, Jordan Beyer, and new signing Joe Worrall, they may decide to extend his loan period permanently for an estimated £12 million plus add-ons to ensure they don’t lose out on yet another exciting Cobham talent.
