Johann Berg Gudmundsson of Burnley FC explains his unexpected departure to Saudi Arabia.
Johann Berg Gudmundsson acknowledges that the chance presented by his “unexpected” transfer to Saudi Arabia was too excellent to pass up. After being released by the team at the end of the previous campaign, the “Iceman” unexpectedly returned 49 days later on a one-year deal.
In the 5-0 rout of Cardiff City last week, Gudmundsson scored on his 200th appearance. However, he has now left for the second time, permanently ending his eight-year stay with a move to Al-Orobah FC for an undisclosed amount. Gudmundsson gave Clarets+ an explanation of what transpired, saying, “It’s something I didn’t expect.” An amazing project presented itself that was too fantastic to pass up.
“This is definitely not what I expected. Of course, my main goal was to return to Burnley and perform to the best of my ability, but I also felt that I needed a fresh challenge, and this opportunity presented itself. “It’s a great opportunity for me, and since I want to play football for as long as I can because I’m in the later stages of my career, I felt that this was the right move at this moment.”
“But as I said, it’s an unexpected one and definitely something I didn’t expect, but here we are.”
Gudmundsson added: “It happened extremely quickly. I’m flying out and we have a few games before the international break.
“It’s difficult. I said goodbye, I came back, I say goodbye again, so there’s a lot of emotions. But it was fantastic to play at Turf Moor [in his last game].
“I wasn’t involved in the first game [against Luton Town], I had a bit of an injury but I came back, trained a few times and scored. There was something magical about it. I was just extremely happy to play my last game at Turf Moor and score a goal in a 5-0 win.”
Gudmundsson is sure the Clarets are bound for great things even if they are leaving with a heavy heart. “Leaving this club is really difficult,” he remarked. “The new manager has been excellent both in preseason and during the start of the season, so this club is in good hands.” “To hopefully get promoted back to the best league in the world, the team will need the support of the fans at every home and away game.” I’ll be keeping a careful eye on everything and chatting with everyone this season.
