3-Team Trade Pitch Would Send Steph Curry to the Lakers

A prospective collaboration between Stephen Curry and LeBron James has been touted for years. However, for it to happen on the Los Angeles Lakers, a third team must be willing to help organize the blockbuster.

Inviting the New York Knicks into the deal, who are looking for a starting center, is one method to bring together two of the NBA’s best players ever.

Lakers get Curry and Moses Moody.

Golden State Warriors receive: Julius Randle, Mitchell Robinson, and D’Angelo Russell.

The move would necessitate first-round compensation from both the Knicks and the Lakers. However, in a Curry-Davis trade, the Warriors would get their pick of the litter.

This deal strengthens New York’s center rotation while also marking the end of the Randle era in the Big Apple.

Golden State begrudgingly ends the Curry era, but in doing so, it adds a potential All-NBA forward who may reclaim even more assets after he recovers from season-ending shoulder surgery.

And the Lakers make one last title run with James, who is nearing the end of his career. It’s a top-tier blockbuster, but if Curry wants to play alongside James in a non-Olympic scenario, this will secure it.

Why Would the Warriors Trade Stephen Curry?
Curry has removed the line “Guard for the @Warriors” from his Instagram bio, causing a stir on X (previously known as Twitter).

That does not imply a trade is imminent. It nearly never has in the history of professional athletes’ social media use.

However, James must also consider Golden State’s unsuccessful trade attempt. They approached the Lakers at last season’s trade deadline and, according to John Hollinger of The Athletic, obtained Curry’s approval.

“Curry had given a thumbs-up to the idea, which reflects a level of comfort between the two even before they worked so beautifully together en route to Olympic gold,” Hollinger wrote on Wednesday, August 13.

After losing Klay Thompson to free agency, the Warriors attempted two trades: one for Lauri Markkanen and another for Paul George, who chose to join the Philadelphia 76ers in free agency.

Golden State appears to be in a holding pattern, with the 2024-2025 season just two months away. Curry, their franchise player, lacks an identifiable co-star.

The 36-year-old superstar is also eligible for an extension. However, Anthony Slater claims that no deal for Curry is imminent.

“He [Curry] flew back from Paris a few days ago and plans to unplug from basketball-related business for a few weeks,” Slater told reporters on August 15. “So any contract conversation isn’t expected to take place in the near future, league sources said.”

Curry may extend his current contract by one year and $62.6 million, which runs through the 2025-2026 season.

However, if he grows more involved in the thought of playing with James, or if next season begins slowly, things might heat up in the Bay Area. Stranger things have transpired during the NBA’s player empowerment era.

Why Would the Lakers Drop Anthony Davis?
Los Angeles’ decision to part with Davis is a much easier concept to accept. For as good as he has been, his value may never be higher than after the 2023-2024 season.

In addition to 76 regular-season appearances, Davis averaged 24.7 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.3 blocks, and 1.2 steals per game last season.

The nine-time All-Star is the Lakers’ biggest trade piece outside of LeBron. And his teaming with James is four years removed from their only championship.

Since reaching the NBA Finals in 2020, Los Angeles has a 165-153 regular season record and a 9-14 postseason mark.

The Lakers have been unable to rebuild a championship-caliber squad around Davis and James. If they don’t believe that will change this season, they should sell high on Davis.

If a deal for Curry presented itself, Los Angeles would have to consider trading Davis to make it happen. Few possible team-ups are more anticipated than his on-court connection with James during the Paris Olympics.
