“This saga needs to be put to bed.” – Pundit reacts to Wout Weghorst, Burnley new

Burnley’s decision to bring Wout Weghorst on this summer, in the opinion of former Sheffield Wednesday player Carlton Palmer, is the right one.

The Dutch striker, whose next destination is believed to be Ajax, is optimistic that he will be able to return home in the near future, according to journalist Sacha Tavolieri.

With just two league goals in 22 games since his rumoured £12 million transfer from Wolfsburg, the frontman has fallen short of expectations at Turf Moor since his arrival in January 2022.

The Lancashire club believes that this is the ideal moment to send the Dutch international on his way permanently after he spent the last two years playing on loans for Besiktas, Manchester United, and Hoffenheim.

Wout Weghorst’s time at Burnley is coming to an end as he is likely to join Ajax.

Weghorst has been in talks with the Eredivisie powerhouses, according to Tavolieri, who confirmed this earlier this week on X. The striker is reportedly extremely optimistic that a deal will be finalised before the end of the month.

With his departure from Turf Moor, he will put an end to a miserable stint with the Clarets, during which he has spent more time away from the team than in Lancashire.

Having started the season as a substitute in Burnley’s first two Championship games, Palmer feels that the moment has come to end all relations with the Dutchman.

It is believed that Wout Weghorst is very close to joining the massive Ajax team, the former England international informed FLW.

He hasn’t gotten much playing time at Burnley and has spent much of his time being loaned out. It’s been a sad experience for him.

He has only two years left on his contract, yet in the first two games, he has been on the bench and has come on as a substitute.

“At 32 years old, his transfer to Burnley hasn’t exactly gone well; he’s had to spend a lot of time on loan.”

Appearances 18
Goals 9
Assists 4

“He hasn’t really made much of an impact at Burnley, but his best loan spell was probably at Besiktas, where he played 18 times and scored nine goals with four assists.”

Scott Parker still has to reduce the Burnley team.

Burnley still has the largest roster in the Championship as of right now, even if a lot of players left the club this summer.

The Clarets still have 32 players on their roster, which is now only equalled by Oxford United and Cardiff City in the second division. Eleven players have already left the team in recent months.

Given that Weghorst is believed to be paid £35,000 per week by Capology, his departure would also help free up some cash for the upcoming season.

Palmer thinks the Ajax move will be best for all parties in the coming days, with the Clarets able to focus on getting out of the EFL as soon as possible. There is a lot of competition for forward spots at Turf Moor.

“There are players like Lyle Foster and Jay Rodriguez who can play up top, Zeki Amdouni who can play up top when necessary, Michael Obafemi who can also play up top, and summer signing Andreas Hountondji,” he went on.

The best course of action for Weghorst and the team would likely be for him to go, given these alternatives for Scott Parker.

“One would assume that he would perform admirably at this level in the championship, but I believe this story needs to end, and a move to Ajax would be better for both parties to end what has been a disappointing period and possibly a good financial move for the club.”
