After Celtic and Brendan Rodgers called out derby bullshit, Rangers finally took action.

They’ve taken their time but Rangers are finally getting the ball rolling on stadium works needed to restore away derby ticket allocations to reasonable levels.

Over the summer, Celtic spent money on upgrades at Celtic Park to better enhance the matchday experience for away Rangers fans at derby matches, which was to be reciprocated across the city.

After years of drastically decreasing attendance, an agreement was reached with the Ibrox team and the SPFL to allow approximately 5% of away fans into the stadium during Celtic and Rangers games.

Rangers broke their promise to Celtic and was unable to provide assurances that the work would be finished in time for the season’s second derby, which is usually played around New Year’s Day.

Consequently, Celtic made the decision to deny tickets to any Rangers supporters for their encounter at Celtic Park the following week. Brendan Rodgers masterfully ridiculed them in a media conference, making it obvious where the guilt lay.

As part of the safety precautions necessary to allow thousands of Celtic supporters to re-enter their stadium for derbies, Rangers has finally submitted a planning permission request for the installation of nets at Ibrox, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

This implies that the work will ideally be completed well before the third and fourth league games between the two teams in 2025, when tickets are expected to be distributed in accordance with the agreements.

Pressure from Celtics on Rangers pays off

It appears that the public nature of the ongoing argument has now roused the Ibrox sign to act on the matter. Celtic was right to take this position last week when they refused tickets.

Rangers and the SPFL both denied that the Bhoys’ decision to cancel their tickets was caused by their work delay. The situation has changed as a result of the Scottish champions’ pressure.
