Newcastle send strong message to Crystal Palace but alternative has ‘crazy’ transfer clause

In the event that a deal for Marc Guehi cannot be reached, Newcastle United is considering their alternatives.

Crystal Palace has received a strong message from Newcastle United that the Magpies are willing to look at alternatives to top target Marc Guehi.

Joachim Andersen will go to Fulham for £30 million, while Crystal Palace is still holding out for “superstar money” for Guehi, his defensive partner. With less than a week remaining in the transfer window, the Eagles’ demands seem like a gamble even if Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish could not have imagined losing both center backs.

Guehi’s contract has fewer than two years left on it, but in addition, because of his outstanding achievements at the Euros, the England international is now worth more than ever. As much as that supports Crystal Palace’s demand of, say, £70 million, would the team really be able to command that kind of money in a year if the Eagles don’t lock him down to a new contract? especially now that a number of teams are more cautious than ever in the transfer market because to PSR limits and potential punishments.

The fact that Dominic Solanke is the most expensive Premier League acquisition of the current transfer window—Spurs and Bournemouth reached an agreement for a deal worth up to £65 million to acquire the striker—is fairly instructive. While it is a substantial amount, a handful of players who went for sums ranging from £60 million to £100 million a year ago including Declan Rice, Moises Caicedo, Josko Gvardiol, Rasmus Hojlund, Kai Havertz, and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Guehi would be tenacious and fit in this category. After missing out on acquiring key targets like Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak in the closing days of past windows, Newcastle hasn’t given up on the defender. That being said, in the event that a breakthrough is not achieved, the Magpies have also been actively considering other possibilities. Crystal Palace is reminded of this by Newcastle’s interest in Chelsea center-back Axel Disasi and Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba. Eddie Howe had earlier warned the team that they would be ready to back out of a deal if the asking price was “too much.”

Although Tapsoba only recently inked a new long-term contract with Bayer Leverkusen last year, he is a target because of his ‘crazy’ release clause, which he willingly acknowledged was a part of the agreement. After winning the Bundesliga the previous season, Tapsoba had been anticipating his first taste of Champions League football and expressed only last month that he ‘did not come here to move again after two years’.

Disasi, on the other hand, joined Monaco during the summer transfer window in which Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell began his employment there in 2020. The Frenchman continued by complimenting Mitchell on being “great with me” while he worked for the Principality.

Earlier this summer, Disasi underwent surgery to repair a hernia. Despite the recent turmoil at Stamford Bridge, the 26-year-old was not considered fit to play in Chelsea’s opening weekend loss to Manchester City.
