“New Beginning”: Scott Parker on the significance of reintegrating Burnley’s benched players

Reintegrating players who were out of favour under the previous management was one of Burnley’s top concerns, according to Scott Parker.

We have already witnessed a wide range of Clarets players engaged in two of the team’s first games of the new season who were either on the outside looking in or not with the team at the end of the previous campaign.

Burnley’s matchday roster for the opening game of the season contained five players from last season’s loan squad: Luke McNally, Connor Roberts, Scott Twine, Anass Zaroury, and Wout Weghorst.

Parker acknowledges that this isn’t by accident, as it was a top concern for him when he succeeded Vincent Kompany in the summer.

“That was probably one of the most important things really,” he said.

“Obviously, we have a large team, and some of the guys from the previous season may not have played much football, so their circumstances were extremely different from perhaps those of the year before.

Everyone is starting from scratch now that I’m here. Everyone gets the chance to join this team and is subject to fresh scrutiny. That’s just how things have been for the past four weeks, and this week is no exception.

“Even though the team is large, each player has put in a lot of work and given their all.”

Of the five players mentioned above, Roberts is the only one who started Burnley’s first two games against Cardiff City and Luton.

Due to Vitinho’s continued contract and the arrival of Shurandy Sambo on a free transfer, the full-back spent the second half of the previous season on loan at Leeds United, raising doubts about his future at Turf Moor.

However, the Welshman has put in a lot of work under Parker and has earned his due rewards.

Parker remarked, “Connor is an older professional who is wise and a very, very good football player.”

He’s a good professional who, despite last year and the disappointment of perhaps not being around it, has returned and completed the task at hand. He makes things work. He’s also very clever and cute.
