Following Chris Rigg’s impressive performance against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday afternoon, former Sunderland captain Gary Bennett showered the prodigy with praise. Rigg plays midfield for the Black Cats.
Due to a late injury to summer signing Alan Browne, Rigg was an unexpected addition to Regis Le Bris’ starting lineup. Nevertheless, he excelled in the park’s centre alongside Dan Neil and Jobe Bellingham.
Bennett has now added his own evaluation to the discourse that Rigg’s impressive performance against the Owls, despite still only being 17 years old, has generated.
Speaking to The Telegraph on Sunderland’s team’s relative inexperience, the BBC pundit remarked, “They are a very, very young team and that still concerns me a little bit.” We have a couple of very talented young players who have been outstanding, but it will be intriguing to see how long they can keep this up.
“At the age of seventeen, Chris Rigg is exceptionally skilled. He appears in games and seems to have everything. There may not be a player of his age in the Premier League or the Championship doing what he is doing, in my opinion. He is an all-around midfielder. Considering his small, he possesses strength and self-sufficiency. However, he possesses all of it—his calmness, his usage of the ball, and his timing when passing.
“You can see why everyone is staring at him—he’s only going to get better. He is among the best young players that I have ever witnessed at Sunderland, and I have seen a lot. He’s unique.
Against Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup third round in January of last year, Rigg made his Sunderland squad debut. He has since scored three goals in 28 senior appearances for the Black Cats.
Earlier this summer, the midfield player signed a professional deal at the Stadium of Light, and it is now anticipated that he will remain on Wearside until 2027. “I am absolutely buzzing,” Rigg remarked at the time, discussing the agreement.
