The Philadelphia Eagles have started training camp, just like all 32 NFL clubs. Coach Nick Sirianni’s squad is back this year with a tremendous chip on their shoulder following their Wild Card round loss.
The Eagles, who ended the previous season with the 30th-ranked defense in points allowed, have made a number of adjustments since then. James Bradberry, a Pro Bowl cornerback, will be starting at a new position for the first time in his NFL career in one of those moves.
James Bradberry’s days with Philadelphia Eagles may be numbered
Bradberry was working as a safety on the opening day of Eagles training camp, but he wasn’t a starter. He has been practicing with the second team instead, which may indicate a forthcoming roster change.
Eagles source Zach Berman claims that if Philadelphia can find a team willing to trade for the 30-year-old defensive back, Bradberry would be a “sensible outcome.”
In the 2024 NFL Draft, the Eagles selected Quinyon Mitchell with the 22nd choice in the first round and Cooper DeJean with the 40th overall selection, using their top two picks on defensive backs. Bradberry’s contract, meanwhile, only lasts until 2025.
Contract with James Bradberry: cap hit of $4.3 million in 2024 and $7.8 million in 2025
Bradberry’s cap number is low enough to pique the interest of another team. However, he had a career-low one interception last season and gave up a quarterback rating of 108.6 when targeted. His play had deteriorated.
Teams may be hesitant to trade for Bradberry due to his success, but there are many teams that could use another competent covering player with the kind of track record and upside Bradberry has.
