Why a half-empty Stadium could watch Aston Villa’s Premier League prime time opener

Aston Villa’s 2024–2025 Premier League season begins at West Ham United, but a matchday turnout at the London Stadium may still be marred by a rise in ticket prices.

Though attention is quickly shifting from Euro 2024 to the Premier League’s return, Aston Villa’s opening game may be lacking a crucial component.

In precisely one month and one day, Villa will return to league action, opening up at West Ham United’s home, the London Stadium. While Unai Emery and company will be hoping to at least duplicate their fourth-place finish from the previous season, why not aspire even higher?

Due to Villa’s impressive season-ending performance and the Hammers’ recent selection of Julien Lopetegui as manager, the match is scheduled for Saturday, August 17, at 5:30 p.m. For one particular reason, though, ticket prices, the stadium might be just partially full when the Sky Sports cameras arrive.

Supporters of Villa know all too well about this issue because the team recently announced price increases for the upcoming campaign. It seems that West Ham has followed suit from year to year, which affects the price points for local fans who want to see games against the top competition.

Villa’s classification as ‘Category A’ opponents for the Hammers stems from their qualification for the Champions League the previous season. As such, supporters can expect to pay between £45 and £105 for the cheapest general admission seats at the London Stadium.

The elimination of child concessions from West Ham’s “Category A” fixtures affects season ticket holders as well. This implies that the price of a child’s ticket for the season’s first game will be equal to that of an adult’s.

Hammers United’s fan base has been especially outspoken over the price increase; they’ve even launched an online petition urging the team to go back to their prior pricing model. According to a Hammers News story, supporters of the team might protest the raise by staying home from the game and watching TV instead.
