Personal terms & long-term deal agreed after £25m Newcastle United ‘green light’ claim

AC Milan are close to signing a central defender, potentially paving the way for Newcastle United to strike a deal of their own.

The Italian powerhouses and Strahinja Pavlovic of RB Salzburg have reportedly reached a personal terms agreement for a long-term deal, according to

The two teams are now in negotiations, and a transfer fee is anticipated to be agreed with shortly.

The fact that Milan signed a center-back indicates that they are at least getting ready to live without Malick Thiaw, who is one of the players Newcastle is considering.

The 22-year-old, who joined the Rossoneri two years ago from Schalke 04, is bound to the team until 2027. In his 54 appearances, he has helped the team go to the quarterfinals of the Europa League and the semifinals of the Champions League in back-to-back seasons.

When Thiaw paired Fikayo Tomari, another Newcastle target, in defense during the two teams’ 0-0 draw in the San Siro in September of last year, Magpies manager Eddie Howe had a first-hand look at the player. He was limited to 21 Serie A games in the previous season due to a hamstring injury, which kept him out of the Champions League group stage match at St. James’ Park.

Due to ACL injuries that will keep Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles out of action until the end of the season, United will be looking to reinforce their defense options in the upcoming months. Lloyd Kelly left his previous team, AFC Bournemouth, on a free transfer, which was handled by Howe.

The last time Newcastle and Milan conducted business was just a year ago, when Sandro Tonali moved to Tyneside for an alleged £55 million.

The Italian midfielder was suspended for ten months for unlawful betting charges after making twelve appearances. He can play again against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League in late August.
