Leicester City target completes £10m transfer

Albert Gronbaek was connected with City, Lille, and Galatasaray in the winter, but has now moved to France after continuing to impress with Norwegian club Bodo/Glimt.

While Leicester City’s hunt for an offensive midfielder continues, one of their targets has moved to France.

Albert Gronbaek has signed for Rennes in Ligue 1, for a reported €12 million (£10 million) from Bodo/Glimt. The Dane has risen to prominence in recent years for his goals and assists for the Norwegian national team, particularly in European competitions.

Several Norwegian clubs, including City, Lille, Galatasaray, and Dean Smith’s Charlotte FC, expressed interest in signing Gronbaek during the January transfer window. It became clear shortly after that City would be unable to do any inbound business unless they sold players.

Gronbaek was available this summer and may have been considered again, as City needed an offensive midfielder when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall left. However, he will advance his career at Rennes, who placed 10th in the French top flight previous season.

The 23-year-old had maintained the strong form that had led to City’s first interest in him. Gronbaek scored six goals in the Europa Conference League last season, and in the Norwegian summer league, he had eight goals and two assists in 15 games.

For City, the hunt continues. With City in a transfer fight with Roma, Matias Soule, the Juventus attacker, continues to be a hot topic.Celtic’s Matt O’Riley is another player on their radar.

City were also linked with Callum O’Hare, a free agent who turned down the opportunity to stay at Coventry. However, he has since signed a contract with Sheffield United.
