Wilfried Gnonto of Leeds United is allegedly in the running to join Everton this summer.
Gnonto moved from FC Zurich in 2022 and spent two seasons at Elland Road. Although the Italian international had a strong Premier League debut, Sam Allardyce’s team was demoted to the Championship.
Gnonto’s performance in the second division last season under Daniel Farke was impressive, with eight goals and two assists. It is said that this performance attracted the interest of Premier League clubs. Newcastle United and Everton, who saw their £25 million offer for the 20-year-old turned down by Leeds last summer, are rumored to be interested in the adaptable Italian.
After spending last season on loan at Goodison Park, Jack Harrison has already been revealed as a new addition to the Toffees this summer. The Toffees are also among the favorites to sign Gnonto this summer; according to TeamTalk rumors, they are “confident” in defeating interest from other teams. The Toffees were given two different point reductions for PSR violations during the previous season.
Leeds reportedly held out for about £30 million when they turned down Everton’s approaches for Gnonto last summer; they may seek that much once more this summer. Nevertheless, Leeds will be very hesitant to see Gnonto leave without being fairly compensated for his services given the massive exodus of elite talent anticipated at Elland Road this summer, with Archie Gray having already left the team and Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville among those predicted to follow him out the exit door.
Only basement boys Sheffield United scored fewer goals in the Premier League last season than Dyche’s team did with 38 games played. Everton finished second in terms of goals scored. With the addition of Gnonto, another player who could expand Dyche’s offensive options, and the acquisition of Iliman Ndiaye from Marseille this summer, they have already attempted to address that.
Meanwhile, Gnonto’s versatility—the little attacking midfielder can play anywhere in the front line—would be of tremendous use to the Magpies. This summer, Newcastle United will be looking to add another striker, preferably one who can play out wide, and Gnonto meets a lot of those requirements.
