Aston Villa transfer target branded ‘traitor’ in graffiti as police called in over ‘hate crime’

BirminghamLive has the latest Aston Villa news, including reports that the club is linked with Spain Euro 2024 winner Mikel Merino.

Aston Villa-linked Mikel Merino has been mercilessly labelled a traitor for representing Spain.

Merino helped Spain win Euro 2024 by scoring the winning goal against hosts Germany in the quarterfinals and coming off the bench in the final against England. Merino’s Real Sociedad partner Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winning goal against the Three Lions, but furious fans have labelled the Real Sociedad duo ‘traitors’ in graffiti in the Basque area of the country.

Carlos García, a former councillor in Elorrio, has reported the graffiti as a hate crime. He stated, “I have just filed a complaint with the Municipal Police of Elorrio for a hate crime against the unfortunate authors of these graffiti and banners.”

“Against the National Team, against Spain and against the European champion players Merino and Oyarzabal.”

Merino and Oyarzabal are both Basque players, and many fans do not want players from their region to represent Spain.

Villa are eager to welcome Merino to Villa Park as they prepare for the Premier League and Champions League.

Arsenal are also reportedly interested in the 28-year-old, who joined Sociedad in 2018. According to Goal, the Gunners want to offer him a ‘deal of a lifetime’ to move from La Liga to the Premier League this summer. Mikel Arteta’s side are thought to be the favourites to sign the winger, ahead of Unai Emery’s Villa.

Merino discussed his future last month, saying, “The next step needs to come from myself, from me, from assessing myself, understanding what player I am now, where I am, and where I want to go. And how do you do it?
