Derek Clark responds to Clement’s transfer admittance at Rangers with, “Alarm bells ringing.”

Derek Clark claims that Philippe Clement’s declaration that Rangers must sell players in order to make transfers has “alarm bells ringing.”

Speaking with Joshua Barrie on the Rangers Review on July 15, Clark expressed surprise at Clement’s remarks, which were first reported by the Daily Record on July 13. Clement said that he was unaware of the circumstances when he was appointed in October 2023.

Although Clark and Barrie agreed that this was a concerning development, they said that improved fan communication on the subject will help allay additional fears as the new season got closer.

“It’s fair to say that the manager’s comments on transfers have maybe raised alarms among many,” Clark stated.

It’s a little concerning, I have to admit, because he said he was unaware that they needed to sell before they could buy when he arrived in October. What’s going on here?

Rangers transfer strategy laid bare in complicated summer at Ibrox

Some supporters may be worried about the upcoming season after Clement’s remarks suggesting he knows the Gers’ transfer strategy, especially given the proactive start to the window.

The club has to maintain the standard that they have begun to create, having already welcomed five new players and confirmed the arrivals of Oscar Cortes and Mohamed Diomande [Daily Record, 4 June].

The rumour that selling at Ibrox is required before purchasing casts doubt on the futures of a number of well-known players, especially because the Gers have not yet received a transfer fee for any of the players who have left.

Players like Jack Butland, for whom Clement says a move is not possible, are expected to command the highest prices, and moving one of them might be a major blow to the Belgian team’s efforts to rebuild.

This summer, Clement hopes to bring in a tonne of new players and bid farewell to as many as well. However, the transfer policy implemented by the club’s administration may limit his ability to decide who remains and who leaves.
