Man United are now looking at ‘complete’ player who Newcastle thought they were signing last month

Manchester United’s quest to sign a new striker could coincide with Newcastle United’s forward search.

Given that Callum Wilson’s future is still very much in doubt, the Magpies may be looking for a goal scorer this summer. Newcastle United will need to acquire a new striker if Wilson decides to leave St. James’ Park, as is thought to be likely.

Alexander Isak’s backup will need to be covered by someone else; ideally, this someone will be healthy each week. That’s the problem with Wilson, who is an unquestionable goal scorer. However, his track record for fitness can, and it has been a persistent problem for him at Newcastle United.

Newcastle had identified Callum Wilson replacement

This summer, there were rumors that Dominic Calvert-Lewin could take Wilson’s place at Newcastle.

The 27-year-old is well-liked by the Magpies, who made a valiant effort to sign him in 2022. But two years ago, Newcastle determined that Calvert-Lewin was too costly.

By the year 2024, the problem still exists. In June, Newcastle was optimistic about acquiring Calvert-Lewin despite rumors that Yankuba Minteh may leave.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin of Everton warms up prior to the Premier League match between Everton FC and Manchester City at Goodison Park on May 14, 2023...

However, the Toffees’ demands for money caused the agreement to fall through. According to reports, Everton demanded £37 million for Calvert-Lewin, a sum that Toon executives were unable to afford.

Newcastle left, and now other teams are showing interest in Calvert-Lewin.

Manchester United now consider Dominic Calvert-Lewin move

The Athletic claims that Manchester United has talked about buying Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton.

While Erik ten Hag is thinking about adding another attacker to help Rasmus Hojlund, the Red Devils are set to recruit Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna.

They also have Calvert-Lewin and former Newcastle United player Ivan Toney on their list of targets.

The Athletic say that Calvert-Lewin will be significantly less expensive and that a £30 million contract with Everton is “plausible.”

They also say he will not be signing a new deal and is looking to depart Goodison Park. Additionally, Calvert-Lewin has informed the Geordie Boot Boys that he has no plans to extend his current contract with Everton.

Newcastle could go back in for Calvert-Lewin

As his current contract expires in 2025, he may be able to quit next year without incurring any fees.

That will make Everton want to sell this summer more than to take the chance of losing him for nothing. They must receive payment for him, especially considering their current financial predicament.

Because of this, Man United is considering a move, and Newcastle’s return to the negotiation table for the “complete” striker should not be discounted.

It was speculated that Newcastle might rekindle their interest in Calvert-Lewin later in the summer following the breakdown of a deal in June. That would not be surprising, given Eddie Howe’s obvious admiration for the player.

Wilson’s performance will be crucial for Newcastle. There will need to be a substitute if he leaves. And you have to think that the Magpies will give Calvert-Lewin another go if they find themselves in that situation—that is, of course, if Manchester United hasn’t closed a deal of their own.
