Kristjaan Speakman’s Sunderland backroom staff call with Regis Le Bris

The choice of Sunderland’s assistant manager will ultimately be made by REGIS LE BRIS, as Kristjaan Speakman has vehemently denied rumors that the new head coach will be forced to hire backroom personnel.

Le Bris took over as the Black Cats’ new manager this week, but he is still collaborating with the same group of coaches who were there before him.

There have been hints all summer long that Sunderland’s administration have sought to maintain control over the backroom setup, and that their unwillingness to let prospective head coaches bring in their own staff may have hampered their hunt for a new manager.

Speakman is working with Le Bris to choose and interview possible applicants for the assistant head coach position, and he is adamant that this is not the case. But in the end, the choice will be made by Sunderland’s French manager.

The sporting director of the Black Cats stated, “I think Regis is really keen to have the best. I think his phrase would be team-mates, even as staff.”Additionally, he does not currently have a group of individuals who he has collaborated with.

That probably has more to do with his past, and he made it very evident that he has a profile around the kind of staffing structure he is looking for. Right now, we’re working to add another assistant who fits that description.

“Then, when that assistant starts working, that will definitely have an impact on where we are with the other positions and where we might want to grow or where we might want to get more information about the staffing structure.”

Le Bris is also getting to know Sunderland’s current coaching staff and evaluating any knowledge gaps that might exist in the current group.

While Mike Dodds and fellow first-team coach Michael Proctor will continue to play a significant role, Le Bris has already made it clear that he would prefer to employ someone with specialized expertise of set-pieces. Dodds served as temporary manager for the last three months of the previous season.

Speakman continued, “He [Le Bris] doesn’t really know the people we’ve got here, both coaching staff and wider.” Since everything is interconnected, changing one piece on the board may need you to take into account every other component as well.

Therefore, we are currently going through that process, just like we did with the last head coach (Michael Beale).Regretfully, time caught up with us and we had to make some bigger adjustments.
