Aston Villa ready to sell one of their most overpaid players

Aston Villa have been delicately navigating the harmful “PSR” rules enacted by the Premier League, but they remain intent on pushing for more in the 2024/25 season after an incredible 2023/24 campaign that saw them qualify for the Champions League

Few clubs in European football are rising as rapidly as Aston Villa, benefiting from an impressive model implemented by former Sevilla power duo Unai Emery and Monchi, who once dominated the Europa League for the historic LaLiga side.

Aston Villa have already made a few notable signings in Ross Barkley and Ian Maatsen this summer, but they are absolutely hungry for more players who can make a big impact.

In order to do that, Villa need to make some sales, too, and the Birmingham Mail’s John Townley reports that the Lions are open to listening to transfer offers for Diego Carlos.

With reported wages over five million euros per season, the former Sevilla center back is one of the highest-earning players at Aston Villa, and, alongside Youri Tielemans, one of their most disappointing and overpaid.

Diego Carlos formed a top-class center back partnership with Jules Kounde in LaLiga, but his over aggressiveness and ostensibly declining abilities have turned him into a liability for Aston Villa.

Last season, the 31-year-old started 20 matches for Aston Villa and was phased out by Emery as a starter, performing as one of the worst center backs in the Premier League.
