West Ham makes a £35 million attempt to get a top-tier defence.

It is possible that West Ham supporters will witness a return to a playing style that is somewhat reminiscent of the “West Ham way” under Julen Lopetegui in 2024–2025.

Despite his many accomplishments, including winning the club’s first major trophy in more than 40 years and getting them into Europe, David Moyes played a style that prioritised safety most of the time.

He gained few supporters for that, since they undoubtedly thought that playing on the front foot and constantly attacking the opposition was the best course of action.

West Ham want Jean-Clair Todibo

That is, after all, exactly how Lopetegui wants his teams to operate, and in order to do this, the players must be able to follow his example.

He seems to be interested in hiring Jean Clair Todibo, a former centre back for Barcelona who plays for Nice.

According to L’Equipe (subscription required), the 24-year-old enjoyed another stellar season in 2023–2024. As a result, it’s very obvious why the French club rejected the Hammers’ opening offer of €35 million.

The East Londoners’ chairman David Sullivan is known for undercutting his competitor in commercial transactions, despite the fact that his financial status is unclear.

The club’s supporters aren’t foolish, though, so he can rightfully tell them that he’s been willing to sign players of a high calibre.

Sullivan will eventually have to pay the going fee, no questions asked, if West Ham is serious about making progress.

It is unclear if the club will reapply for Todibo later in the window or if he will sign with one of the numerous other teams who are interested in his services. Todibo would be a step up in quality for the team.
