Talks about a transfer fee ‘green light’ for Newcastle United to sign 22-year-old Champions League standout

According to reports, Newcastle United has been informed of the cost of one of their defensive transfer targets.

Malick Thiaw, defender for AC Milan, has been shortlisted by the Magpies as a possible center-back addition this summer. The two parties have communicated with the Serie A team and the player’s representatives.

During the 2023–24 season, the 22-year-old defender made 30 appearances for AC Milan and was awarded his third cap for the German national team.

As per a recent Italian report, Thiaw needs to ask for a certain amount in order for AC Milan to approve his departure. According to Tutto Mercato, Milan would only need to accept an offer of about £25 million.

Thiaw played a significant role in Milan’s team last year as they advanced from the Champions League group stage to the Europa League quarterfinal and finished second in Serie A. In September, the Germany centre back made his Champions League group stage debut at the San Siro in a 0-0 draw against Newcastle.

However, he suffered an injury during the rematch at St. James’ Park, when Milan overcame a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1 and eliminate Newcastle from the European competition.

Two defensive additions have already been confirmed by Eddie Howe’s team this summer: Lewis Hall joined on a permanent loan from Chelsea, while Lloyd Kelly joined after being released from AFC Bournemouth.

But Newcastle remain keen on bolstering their defensive options with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles both recovering from long-term ACL injuries. Lascelles, Trippier, Emil Krafth, Dan Burn and Fabian Schar are also into the final year of their contracts at St James’ Park.
