Many first-team members of Glasgow have already been let go by the Light Blues; among them are Jon McLaughlin, Borna Barisic, Kemar Roofe, John Lundstram, and Ryan Jack, who all left after their contracts expired at the end of May.

Additional senior professionals may be leaving, as reports suggest Sheffield Wednesday is keen on Scott Wright and Birmingham is linked to Connor Goldson.

Attacking midfielder Tom Lawrence is another player that the Scottish powerhouses may bench before the summer transfer window closes.

European interest in Rangers attacker

The Daily Record was recently informed by Turkish publication Kartal Haber that Besiktas is drafting a bid to recruit the Wales international in order to improve their roster.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst, the former Rangers manager who signed Lawrence to the Light Blues, is currently in charge of them and hopes to work with the seasoned playmaker again before the 2024–2025 season.

The publication did not, however, specify how much the Super Lig team is prepared to pay the Scottish Premiership team in order to sign the former Derby County wizard.

Rangers will expect roughly £5 million to offload the player they signed from the Rams on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, according to a report published by Football Insider last month.

It is now unclear if Besiktas, or any other prospective suitor, would be prepared to pay £5 million for the 30-year-old midfield player.

The Gers might not even need to enter the trade market to replace Clement if they are able to cash in on him for £5 million or less, as Clement might already have Ianis Hagi, the ideal alternative, in the building.

It is planned that the Romanian international will rejoin the team following the 2024 European Championship.

Why Rangers should cash in on Tom Lawrence

Rangers should take advantage of Lawrence’s potential big-time offer if one comes in this summer; they might not get another.

Since his current contract ends in the summer of 2020, he will not be able to be sold by the Gers in January as he will be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with overseas teams starting in January.

It appears unlikely that his performances will improve enough to raise his value over what it is presently, given that he will turn 31 in January and enter the later parts of his career.

The 30-year-old gem’s absence from the matchday squad may also be taken into account because he missed 49 games for both club and country the previous season and was absent 26 times during the 2023–24 campaign.

Together, these indications point to the possibility that this is the ideal moment for Clement and Koppen to let him go and look into other candidates to fill his position.

Lawrence’s on-field accomplishments may also be taken into consideration, as the table above illustrates, given that he was not a key player in the team during the previous season.

In 23 games as an attacking midfielder in the Scottish Premiership, he only directly contributed to five goals, so it doesn’t seem like they would need to replace his effect in the closing third.

Why Ianis Hagi could replace him

After his stint on loan—having been sent out by Michael Beale—Hagi may return to the first team, and Clement could replace Lawrence with the forgotten wizard.

In order to complete his recuperation from a serious knee injury, the Romanian playmaker—who former manager Steven Gerrard called a “absolute dream” to work with—was moved out on loan to Alaves.

It has taken the 25-year-old ace some time to regain his form after he suffered the blow in January 2022. During his 371-day absence, he missed an incredible 69 games for Rangers.
