Ex-England player named Forest head coach

Chelsea Pitman, a former England player, has been named head coach of the new Netball Super League club Nottingham Forest Netball.

The 36-year-old retired from international netball following the Roses’ historic silver medal at the World Cup in South Africa last year.

Forest is one of two new clubs allowed to the reformed NSL for 2025, alongside Birmingham Panthers, when the league transitions to professional status.

“I am extremely excited about what this opportunity presents,” said former wing attack Pitman, who will lead Forest’s maiden season next year.

“I am aware that there will be hurdles, but that is what thrills me the most. This is where growth occurs.

“I want to attract athletes who are willing to invest in their netball, help our sport grow, take on new challenges, and use their netball brain. But it’s more than that; I want players that want to be better, more-rounded, holistic athletes, but also decent people.”

Forest are owned and operated by the Premier League football club, which says it has “major plans to develop a multi-sport model”.

Pitman, who was born in Australia, has played for the West Coast Fever and Adelaide Thunderbirds in Australia’s Super Netball league, the Manchester Thunder and London Pulse in the NSL, and New Zealand.

She ended her 14-year domestic playing career last month after spending the 2024 season with the Giants in Sydney.

Pitman won the World Cup with the Australian Diamonds in 2011 before switching allegiance and playing for England in 2017.

She was a member of the Roses team that won their first Commonwealth gold in 2018 in the Gold Coast.
