Chris Rigg joins Sunderland on his first professional deal.

After putting a stop to transfer rumours and pledging his future to the Black Cats, the youthful history-maker Chris Rigg says he knows Sunderland is the perfect location for him.

Sunderland has benefited greatly this summer by the signing of 17-year-old Rigg, who signed a three-year contract—his first professional contract.

Manchester United and Newcastle shown interest in the midfielder this summer. The guy made his debut at the age of 15, becoming the club’s youngest-ever outfield player.

Nonetheless, he feels that he’s headed in the right direction at the Stadium of Light and expresses excitement for what lies ahead, with the England youth international expected to take the lead this season under new head coach Regis Le Bris.

“The club means absolutely everything to me,” stated Rigg. I promise to give it everything I’ve got every time I wear this badge, whether I’m practicing or competing.

To be really honest, I am giddy with excitement. To be signing my first professional deal at a club like Sunderland is a proud occasion for my family and me.

“I’ve been yearning to sign it for the past nine months or so. This, in my opinion, is the greatest location for me to grow both as a player and a person.

“I have received amazing support from the Academy of Light staff the entire time, but there are still so many things I can do better. The laborious work begins.

Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman said, “I’m delighted for Chris, who has always communicated to us that Sunderland is where he wants to be.”

“As everyone knows, it can be difficult to retain exceptional talent in today’s economy, but this would not have been possible without incredible people.

“Our Academy staff, including Robin Nicholls, does an amazing job, and I’m thrilled for all of them that another Academy alumnus has committed to the team for the future.

“Chris’s commitment to our club for the future is a credit to all of the people who work behind the scenes. His brilliance and, more lately, his first-team performances sealed the deal on conjecture and interest.”
