Brighton is searching for the top MLS transfer target.

If Brighton weren’t connected to a top South American transfer target, there wouldn’t be a transfer window. Diego Gómez of Inter Miami is allegedly a target for the Seagulls this time around.

Brighton is among the European teams that have long been linked to the adaptable Paraguayan midfielder. We finally have proof this week that the Seagulls had contacted Lionel Messi’s camp regarding Gómez’s potential signing.

Tom Bogert, a prominent MLS reporter, disclosed that Brighton had formally made a bid for Gómez. There are conflicting reports on the 21-year-old’s asking price from the Seagulls.

If Gómez signs, it will be interesting to see how Brighton’s new manager Fabian Hürzeler uses him in the 3-4-3 system. As a midfield two player, he is ideal. Given his past experiences playing wide and higher up the field, he has the potential to become a very talented wingback as well.

No matter where he plays, Gómez won’t be the Seagulls’ first-choice starter. His six yellow cards in just 14 MLS appearances show that he struggles with positioning. The Premier League will perceive this as an even bigger issue.

However, Gómez may very well be competing for a starting midfield spot with fellow rookie Carlos Baleba or Scotland international Billy Gilmour if he settles in.

It will be intriguing to watch how Gómez is used in Brighton’s 3-4-3 formation by new manager Fabian Hürzeler if he signs. He fits in perfectly as a midfield two player. Considering his prior experience playing wide and higher up the pitch, he might also be developed into a very good wingback.
